Pinnacles National Monument is turning 100, and the yearlong celebration will begin Wednesday with a rededication ceremony.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the monument’s Bear Gulch Nature Center, according to a news release from Interpretation and Education Supervisor Carl Brenner. It will include a Color Guard ceremony, a speech from County Supervisor Reb Monaco and, supposedly, a “special appearance” by Teddy and Edith Roosevelt.

Then-President Theodore Roosevelt created Pinnacles in 1908 to protect the area’s unique geological formations and caves. The monument now includes areas of cultural, historical and environmental importance, Brenner said.

“The rededication ceremony will be held to honor the legacy of community involvement and stewardship that has been crucial to Pinnacles National Monument,” Brenner said in the news release. “As we commemorate the past, we look to the next generation of stewards to ensure that Pinnacles National Monument stays relevant for the next 100 years.”
