Eight current and former San Benito High School water polo players are competing this week in the Fifth Annual Maui Invitational in Hawaii.

The players have been participating with the Morgan Hill Water Polo Club this summer to get ready for the week-long tournament in Kihei, Maui.

There are two teams coached by Live Oak coach Mack Haines – one for under 18 and one open team. Haines has been gracious to allow Hollister players to be a part of his team.

Larry Barr, who one of the assistant coaches and chaperones for the trip, went to high school together with Haines at Lynbrook High.

“It is amazing how many life-long friends you make from playing,” Barr said.

Morgan Hill’s 18U team won its first game Monday 14-4 against Team Maui then tied the Timberwolves 4-4 before losing to the SF Polo Boys 4-0.

In the Open division, Morgan Hill lost to the Timberwolves 3-2 in the first game.

Hollister’s 18U players are Zach Bainter, Joel and David Smith, James Schafer, Lucas Zepeda and Blane Curtice. And Greg Henneman, who is playing water polo for West Valley, and Chris Barr, who played his senior year at Loyola Marymont University, are on the open team.
