Nine different members of the San Benito High girls water polo team deposited goals on Tuesday — Demi Gatrell contributing a team-high three — and the Lady Balers easily defeated visiting Santa Catalina 14-3 in Hollister in Tri-County Athletic League action.
Caitlin Schafer, Tiffany Hill and Amanda Virak each added two goals apiece for San Benito, which improves to 6-1 in the TCAL and 11-6 overall. The Lady Balers have won four straight games.
The one loss to their league record came against Salinas (8-0), which remains undefeated in TCAL play this season. San Benito, meanwhile, which is currently holding down second place in the league standings behind the Cowboys, has one game remaining — a road contest at Carmel on Thursday.
“With a win over Carmel, we’ll be solidified as the second-place team,” San Benito head coach Hayley Vandercook said. “We still want to field that without question.”
A loss to Carmel, which was 2-3 at press time, would give the Lady Balers a second loss and place them into a tie with Gilroy, forcing a series of tiebreakers to take place, Vandercook said.
But for what it’s worth, San Benito defeated Gilroy 15-8 on Sept. 10.
A victory over Carmel, however, would all but ensure the Lady Balers the No. 2 spot heading into next week’s Tri-County Athletic League Tournament.
“It’s gonna be really tough,” Vandercook said.
Jeannette Rodriguez, Hannah Smith, Beka Torres, Lauren Lango and Celina Stotler each supplied San Benito with a goal on Tuesday.
The Lady Balers will visit Carmel Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
