This was a relatively quiet week here at the Red Phone. We’re guessing folks are enjoying their summer vacations, and we couldn’t be happier for them. The weather is fabulous, and so why not?

But there are two small items to deal with, so let’s get to it.

Lazy days, just

shootin’ hoops

A caller wants to know what can be done about private portable basketball hoops left in the street. If you aren’t aware, it’s just fine to have those things in your driveway, but not on public property. Enforcing that rule is the job of code enforcement officer Mike Chambless.

“Those hoops need to be relocated and not left in the street or on the sidewalk,” he tells the Red Phone. But, he cautions, if you have a complaint of that nature, and you call it in anonymously, it will go to the bottom of the pile.

“We need a reporting party,” he says.

If you would like to bring a portable basketball hoop in the public thoroughfare to Chambless’s attention, call him at 636-4356.

Our second issue is an ON HOLD, for 14 days now.

Two weeks ago we asked when the junk in Smith Alley would be removed. We’re told it was put on a list, but the alley is still a mess.

Previous city clean-up programs that might have dealt with such issues have gone the way of so many others due to budget cuts.

Chambless says the city is reluctant to cite the property owners, preferring to catch the dumpers in the act. And he offered this tantalizing tidbit: he said the city actually installs motion-sensing cameras in locations likely to catch people dumping. Then, he says, they can be held liable for the clean-up.

So if you’re planning a midnight dumping run somewhere, don’t assume Big Brother won’t be watching.

As for Smith Alley: we encourage the city to get to it ASAP.

All for now. Have a fabulous weekend, and don’t forget to call us if we can help: 635-9219.
