Running a successful business is not easy, but Hollister PostNet owner Ron Martin believes becoming a vital part of the community is what has made his business what it is today.

Martin’s business, which he has owned with his wife, Jill, for the past six years, was recently ranked the top sixth PostNet in sales worldwide.

The store’s revenue was compared with about 850 other PostNet franchises.

PostNet does about a third of their business in shipping, a third in copying and printing and a third in other miscellaneous services, Martin said.

Steve Greenbaum, PostNet’s president and founder praised Martin and his wife for their achievement.

“This award is a result of Ron and Jill’s commitment to excellence, customer service and the community of Hollister,” Greenbaum said. “They are truly outstanding business owners.”

PostNet arrived in Hollister about eight and a half years ago, and after visiting the store once a day for a couple years on his Federal Express route, Martin decided to buy the franchise, he said.

“I noticed that it had potential,” Martin said. “I had 14 years experience with Fed Ex… and it’s going very well. We’re very happy with it.”

The business has progressed well over the six years Martin has owned the store, but the decline in growth in Hollister and the overall depressed economy has had an effect on it, he said.

“Every community around us is growing, and I think we might be missing the eight ball when it comes to growth,” Martin said. “We need to grow, not just for us, but for all the small businesses in town.”

The store’s revenue has been among the top 10 highest in the PostNet system for the last three years, Martin said. While sales have been down between 15 and 20 percent in the past few months, he contributes his overall success to being active in the community and being conservative with his expenses, he said.

As a board member of the United Way and part of the Rotary, Martin builds relationships and lasting ties with the people who make his business the success it is – his fellow Hollister residents.

“We try to get involved as much as possible,” he said. “People like to work with individuals, not corporations. They see an individual and they get personalized with them… People will come to us because they know us, they know my family, they know my employees.”

PostNet is located in the Nob Hill shopping center, at 1760 F Airline Highway in Hollister.
