The Economic Development Corporation of San Benito County is partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in holding a countywide roundtable discussion Tuesday on job creation and economic growth, the EDC has announced.
The forum is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Veterans Memorial Building in downtown Hollister, in room 218. It is scheduled to last two hours and include business owners, residents, state and local officials, union members, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, economists and other interested parties, according to a press release from the EDC.
Such forums are being organized by the USDA throughout the state, and co-hosting will be the department’s Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service, according to the press release, along with such other groups as the UC Cooperative Extension, Resource Conservation and Development Councils, California State Universities, Valley Health Network, Sierra Nevada Conservancy, farm bureaus, tribal governments, self-help housing groups and others.
The primary focus of the event is to “accelerate job growth in rural America” and some of the topics will include:
– Exploring ways to rejuvenate and promote local business
– Creating jobs by rebuilding infrastructure
– Creating new opportunities from existing ones such as with value-added agriculture products
– Supporting job growth among small businesses
– Preparing workers for 21st Century jobs
– Removing obstacles to job creation
Nancy Martin, president of the EDC, said the organizers “would love a variety of people” at the event to help address many issues affecting this area. She noted, for example, how San Benito County often gets classified as rural when it comes to available development dollars.
“It makes it very difficult for us to receive funding for various projects,” Martin said.
