4.1 magnitude hits Tres Pinos
A swarm of small to moderate earthquakes shook central San Benito County this week, but no incidents of damage were reported, according to the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park.
The largest came Sunday at 9:35 a.m., and registered magnitude 4.1. The brief quake was centered about 8 miles south of Tres Pinos and was 4.3 miles below the surface.
At 10:15 a.m. Monday a magnitude 3.4 quake occurred at the same location, according to the USGS.
Other quakes included a magnitude 3.4 event at 4:02 p.m. and several smaller events.
All the earthquakes appeared to be clustered along the San Andreas Fault Complex.
The magnitude standard replaces the old Richter scale, but it is still logarithmic, meaning that a 4.0 earthquake’s intensity is 10 times greater than a 3.0 earthquake.
