The Miss San Benito Rodeo contest is Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Blue Room at Bolado Park. The contestants this year are Alyssa Abercrombie, Brittany Gilroy and Danielle Escover.

The 2008 Miss San Benito Rodeo, LeAnna Ceglia, will be ending her reign after a successful year.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Ceglia, in the last days of her reign. “It’s was nice to know I represented people in going out. We had to go to mixers and brunches.”

The San Benito High School senior said the year as Miss San Benito Rodeo made her more comfortable with speaking in front of a crowd.

“Sometimes we knew we were going to make a speech,” she said, but sometimes she was called up and had to speak off the cuff.

“It helped me speak better in front of people, in crowds,” she said.

The 18-year-old even said her polished speaking skills helped her land a spot in her major at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, where she will start school soon.

“For my major, we had to have an interview, and only 24 [students] were accepted out of thousands,” she said, of the dental hygiene program.

She had some advice for the three girls who will compete this year in the interview, written test and riding events for Miss San Benito Rodeo.

“Just simply relax and have fun,” she said. “Be yourself. The judges want to see who you really are and, hopefully, that will shine through.”

Though Ceglia’s time as Miss San Benito Rodeo is almost over, she still plans to compete in the Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo.

“I’ll be competing in bell racing and team roping,” she said.
