The encampment along the San Benito River has developed some neighborhood-like features such as pathways leading from tent to tent, gates and decorations.

Panelists and readers answered the following: Do you support the Southside Road site at the old county hospital for a permanent homeless shelter?
Mary Zanger: Yes. This currently unused county property would provide a safe and secure environment and be large enough for services and accommodation.  Better yet it occupies the transportation loop with easy access to shopping and health care plus recreational and church services the town provides. Lastly it is isolated enough to answer those whose fear overcomes them.
Ann Ross: Placing the shelter, and our county’s homeless within, should consider factors including environmental and public safety along with access to services and budget constraints. Based on a thorough assessment of these factors the ideal location for a shelter should be as clear as is the need to build a long term facility as soon as possible.
Ruth Erickson: The old Southside hospital site could work well. It’s a pleasant location, has the county bus system close by to go into town and room to construct a building for support services for the homeless.
Shelley Hale: Yes, it would be better than the riverbed.
