Kinship fund-raiser helps children make and keep family connections

Finding supportive families for abused and abandoned children is the key to an upcoming fund-raiser at the Paicines Ranch Sept. 8.

The Gabilan Chapter Kinship Center’s mission is reflected in its name – to keep children with kin when possible, with support to relatives who take in children whose parents are unable to care for them properly.

The agency not only adopts out children and offers foster care, but also provides support for grandparents or other extended family members who would take in children if they had the resources. In the last two years, the local program has provided support for 753 children living with their grandparents, according to their Web site.

While many of the children are not likely to be on site for the Wine and Food Tasting – visitors must be 21 years or older – they will be in the minds of the participants. The event features wine from many local wineries.

The Gabilan Chapter Kinship Center is working on the finishing touches for the annual fund-raiser and this year makes 51. The Wine and Food Tasting will once again be hosted at Paicines Ranch and the money raised goes to the Kinship Center’s adoption, foster care and mental health services programs, which are offered in Monterey and San Benito Counties.

The event will be at Paicines Ranch, Saturday, Sept. 8 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 a person. For tickets and more information, please call 634-0238.
