Gavilan softball keeps West Valley at bay, wins 4-2
Gilroy

After a painful loss last week to West Valley, in which the Gavilan softball team took a 4-2 lead to the seventh and wound up losing 5-4, the Rams managed to keep West Valley at bay on Tuesday, and held on for a 4-2 win in Gilroy.

Danielle Hernandez allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five over seven innings for the Rams, which improve to 17-6 overall and 4-3 in the Coast Conference – South.

“This win is huge for us,” manager Nikki Dequin said. “Last time, we dominated the game and then handed it to them at the finish.

“We need to start dominating in conference. I think after the loss last week, they didn’t want that to happen again.”

After West Valley took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Audra Brown’s two-RBI double in the third supplied the Rams with a one-run edge.

West Valley would tie the game at two runs apiece in the fourth, but Gavilan would take the lead for good in the fifth after an RBI single by Danielle Scibuola and an RBI squeeze bunt by Brown.

Gavilan will play at Monterey Peninsula College on Thursday at 3 p.m.
