After winning in double overtime earlier this season, the Rams lost 81-79 in overtime to MPC Wednesday night.
Gavilan, who has had to scratch and claw for its eight wins, is averaging slightly more than five points more than its opponents in those games. But the Rams have battled Monterey Peninsula (15-12, 5-3) tough this season.
Gavilan’s John Williams hit his second free throw with 3.2 seconds left to tie the game at 72, but the Rams (8-20, 2-6 conf.) couldn’t pull it out in overtime.
The Rams held the advantage for most of the game, matching MPC’s points with their own until late when the Lobos went on a 13-1 run. Gavilan held a 36-27 lead at halftime after Williams hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and led by as much as 12 when Williams hit another clutch 3-pointer with 10:30 left.
MPC took the lead with 2:20 left, and the lead changed hands seven times in the final minutes of regulation.
The highlight of the game for the Rams was an alley-oop dunk by Jessie LoBue on a pass from Vince Bautista in the first half.
