Gavilan softball loses to Cabrillo 15-4 on Tuesday, 6-3 to
Hartnell on Thursday
The Gavilan softball team had a difficult time defensively this past week in a pair of road games at Cabrillo and Hartnell on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, and will look to rebound this weekend in a 16-team tourney.
On Tuesday, Gavilan lost 15-4 at Cabrillo, while on Thursday, the Rams couldn’t rebound from the previous loss and fell to Hartnell 6-3.
Gavilan is now 5-5 in the Coast Conference – South, 19-9 overall.
In Aptos, Gavilan took a 4-0 lead to the bottom half of the third inning after Audra Brown hit a solo homer for the Rams. But the Seahawks, in the third, fourth and fifth innings alone, plated 15 runs.
Unfortunately for Gavilan, which committed seven errors on the day, only five of Cabrillo’s runs were earned.
“A really bad outing,” manager Nikki Dequin said. “We actually had the lead against them, but as soon as they jumped out in front … we couldn’t recover.”
Danielle Hernandez pitched for the Rams.
On Thursday, Gavilan held an early 2-0 lead on Hartnell in Salinas, but a three-run homer in the bottom of the first gave the Panthers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Rams left 11 runners on base and committed six errors in the contest. Hernandez pitched for Gavilan.
“We’re playing way too tense out there,” Dequin said. “We need to have fun out there again.”
The Rams will travel to Fremont for the Ohlone March Madness Tournament on Saturday, where 16 teams will compete at the Pleasanton Sports Complex.
The Rams will open with Napa Valley at 1 p.m., College of the Siskiyous at 5 p.m., and Diablo Valley at 7 p.m., on Saturday.
They are guaranteed at least one game on Sunday, although that game has not been scheduled.
