The Gavilan hurler pitched every inning of five games in two days during the Shasta Tournament at Redding during the weekend where the Rams went 1-4.
Gavilan had trouble offensively in three of the games when it had just a combined four hits. However, the Rams did stage a remarkable comeback to win their only game, 13-12, over Treasure Valley Community College of Oregon.
Gavilan (6-12) trailed 11-4 after five innings against TVCC before using a seven-run rally to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Amanda Perez’s bases-clearing double was the big hit in the seven-run fifth. The Rams won the game in an international tiebreaker, soaring one run on an error and another on Angelina Fernandez’s RBI single.
Megan Smart, Haylie Cloud, Fernandez and Amanda Rosevear all had two hits in the game. Rosevear slugged a two-run homer.
Rosevear also hit a two-run homer against Shasta in the opening game Saturday which staked Gavilan to a 2-1 lead in the first. Fernandez got a sacrifice fly in the fifth as the Rams closed within 4-3. But they stranded two runners in that inning. Rosevear had two walks in addition to her homer.
The biggest loss in that game was a knee injury suffered by shortstop Melissa Gaxiola, who will be checked on Wednesday to determine how serious the injury is.
“We had to move people around but they did a good job,” coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson said.
In other games, Mary Martinez pitched a no-hitter as Solano defeated Gavilan 12-0, Leticia Asnoros pitched a two-hitter as Sierra blanked the Rams 4-0 and Gavilan had just two hits in a 5-1 loss to Feather River College.
“We didn’t hit the ball that well but we played some good, strong teams,” Dequin-Thompson said. “We actually played well for a while against Solano (it was scoreless through four innings) before we ran out of steam and lost our intensity.
“We came back Sunday and showed a lot of heart and character during the comeback (win over TVCC). We played tough teams and know we can compete. We just need to find a consistent level of play for our team, not reflecting on who we are playing.”
The Rams jump back into Coast Conference action at 3pm today at Monterey Peninsula College.
