Julie Broyer hit a solo home run and the Gavilan Rams softball team made it two wins in a row Thursday as they defeated Monterey Peninsula College 4-1 in Monterey.
Broyer’s blast came in the fifth inning and was a little added insurance for Gavilan, which held MPC scoreless until two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
“Overall, it wasn’t our best game, but we played well enough to win,” manager Nikki Dequin said.
Pitcher Danielle Hernandez allowed one run on five hits and earned the win for the Rams. The lone run allowed came in the last inning when MPC connected on a solo homer.
But by then, it was too little, too late for the Lobos.
In the first, Broyer got on base after a hit-by-pitch and then stole second, where she was knocked in on a Danielle Scibuola RBI single.
Later in the same inning, Audra Brown’s RBI single scored Scibuola, and supplied the Rams with an early 2-0 edge.
Broyer’s home run in the fifth made it 3-0 Gavilan, while Amanda Rosevear hit an RBI single that scored Scibuola for the fourth run later in the inning.
The Rams (18-6, 5-3 Coast Conference – South) will host a doubleheader against College of Sequoias on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.
