Gilroy – The Cabrillo Seahawks didn’t so much fly, as they towered over the net Wednesday night.
The result was a three-game victory over the Gavilan women’s volleyball team 30-28, 30-23, 30-21.
Using a host of ladies six-feet or taller, Cabrillo combined excellent service play with some ferocious slams to seal the victory. Gavilan dropped to 11-8 overall, 1-2 in the Coast Conference.
Rams coach Kevin Kramer chalked up the loss to Cabrillo’s overall talent.
“Player for player, they’re probably the best in Northern California,” Kramer said. “On a good day, they can take anybody.”
Despite facing such a strong squad, Gavilan gave a tenacious effort, scrambling all over the court to scoop balls off the floor.
Nicole Falcao led the Rams with 19 digs, spending almost as much time on the floor to keep balls alive as she did helping keep teammates in order. Sophomore Jamie Temperino led the team with 19 kills to go with 18 digs of her own. Teresa Hodges was the second-leading slam provider with eight kills.
After the game, Temperino said it was just a matter of letting the game get the best of Gavilan early.
“We kind of got a little tense when they went on a run, but we pulled it together,” she said.
Indeed, the Rams gave up very few easy points, exchanging wild rallies that sent players sprawling side to side throughout each game. Down two games to none, Gavilan got off to a great start in the third frame, leading 6-1 and rallying the home crowd. But as the game see-sawed back and forth, the Seahawks were able to stave off the late charge.
“To bounce back (and play hard), it says a lot about their character, how hard they worked in practice,” Kramer said about his team.
That character will continue to be tested going forward, as the Rams will most likely need to win the rest of their league games to advance to playoffs.
The team’s next game will be at home, Saturday, against San Francisco at 10am.
