The San Benito County Chapter of the American Red Cross is expecting things to heat up at the Vault Restaurant on Friday as they auction off dates with local firefighters for a fund-raiser.

The special fund-raiser, called “Hotter-N-Fire,” is a women’s only event which starts at 6:30 p.m. and is intended to raise money for local Red Cross activities and services.

The event will auction off dates with firefighters from both the Hollister and the County fire departments to the highest bidder.

The event is intended to be done in the spirit of fun, Red Cross Executive Director Kathryn Engelhard said.

“This is going to be done very, very tastefully. There will be nothing obscene about this,” she said.

Engelhard thanked the Vault and other local restaurants and businesses that have donated to make the event possible.

“The Vault has been a big part in helping us put this on,” Engelhard said. “They’ve given us a great deal on dinner, so we’ll be making money off of that, which is very kind of the Vault Restaurant.”

Along with the auction, the event will include a dinner at the Vault and other activities.

“There’s also a variety of silent auction items that women can bid on if they are not comfortable bidding on a date,” Engelhard said.

She said the idea for the fund-raiser was based on a similar event made popular by a Red Cross chapter in Texas.

“There is also a dollar dance where you can dance with a firefighter by just putting a dollar in the kitty,” Engelhard said.

Tickets are available at the Vault, the Red Cross chapter office and San Benito Bank for $25 each.

“We only have 150 spots and tickets are going pretty fast so people need to go ahead and get their ticket because we can only fit 150 people up there,” Engelhard said.

Each winning bid includes the date with a firefighter and a dinner package donated by a local restaurant.

“All of the money is going to stay here locally and help with local projects and disaster victims,” she said.
