A frustrated caller asked the Red Phone to check into the numerous potholes that litter the alleyway entrance to St. Luke’s Church on Monterey Street.

She said the potholes in the area can be quite damaging to vehicles driving over them. She also mentioned another trouble spot nearby – in the area near the Hazel’s thrift store – and questioned why the city public works department doesn’t address the problems.

Hollister public works streets official Julian Gaytan noted that the work on smaller potholes is all “hand done” and that the city has a hot mix machine for larger ones. The city tries to schedule pothole patches once a week, but it has been every two weeks lately due to limited resources.

“It is very difficult due to the fact, the manpower and stuff,” he said.

There are no major street projects in the pipeline, he confirmed.
