Editor,
I’d like to point out some interesting facts regarding the San Benito County Republican Central Committee, (SBCRCC), and their current in-fighting. It’s been reported in the local papers that current Chairman Jennifer Zapata is suing the former Chairman Marvin Jones because after convening an Audit Committee, it was concluded that “the Committee has suffered harms to its monies and reputation.” Zapata believes that Marvin should resign because he did not make “prudent financial decisions.”
Marvin followed the instructions of the California Republican Party, which was to “get out the vote.” This was in regards to the elections in November 2004. The CRP made an unprecedented donation, and Jones appointed a Budget Committee to help distribute the funds. Carlos Zapata, spouse of the current chair, was a member of this Budget Committee, but she hasn’t asked him to resign.
I think her problem is not so much how the monies were spent, but that she wasn’t asked about various expenditures. She does not agree with the way Jones “got out the vote.” That is her opinion, and it is subjective at best.
There was 80 percent Republican turnout in the November election, and President Bush received 24 percent more votes in 2004 than in 2000. Those are two examples of the success obtained under Marvin’s leadership. Mrs. Zapata is chairman now and can do things her way. She has the votes she needs to get anything passed. She has filled vacancies on the committee with people who do not know the history between Marvin, herself and the current treasurer, who has been in the paper recently also, for calling the local militia, “geriatric white bastards.”
The new committee members, who were not involved with the SBCRCC the past two years, or present during the January organizational meetings, only hear one side of things. There were meetings last year where members were given the floor for two minutes, and allowed to speak their opinion. Many times, they were critical of Marvin. He let them have their time and then moved on. If anyone has witnessed Zapata at the recent meetings, she will not recognize Marvin or any of his supporters.
In regards to the militia, they are a group of men and women who meet for coffee at the Elegant Touch during the week. They talk about hunting, fishing, politics and other mundane topics. They flip a coin to see who will pay for coffee. One new member of the SBCRCC wrote to the supervisors in regards to certain county officials belonging to this group, “that being a white male extremist organization?”
Before he starts attacking other people, he needs to take a long look in the mirror. That goes for the other vindictive, hateful, self serving individuals on the SBCRCC, who are using the guise of “saving the Republican Party,” to justify their lowly actions.
