Editor,

In response to Mike Smith’s column concerning revitalizing the San Benito County Arts Commission, we, the Hollister Art League, believe that it would benefit not only to local arts but the whole of our county, from elementary school to high school to the aged, art enriches the quality of life.

The Hollister Art League was established by a group of artist in 1963 as a nonprofit organization. Our organization has been self-supporting with artist doing most of the work.

We artists raise money for student scholarships, conduct workshops, hold art exhibits like the Open Studio, Wine and Chocolate event, and local wineries, just to name a few.

We hang local artists’ works at the county library, Hazel Hawkins Hospital, Chamber of Commerce, Country Rose and Bear Flag Galleries.

We are the art teachers in the community, the retired professional artists. We come from a variety of backgrounds with one driving force – the love of art. If you schedule a town hall meeting, we would appreciate an invitation.

Louise Roy, Hollister Art League president
