Hollister – Locals and city folk alike came out in droves for the 72nd annual Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo this weekend. Some 7,000 people attended the three day event, according to the show manager Ann Strickland.

“This was one of the smoothest running events we’ve had,” said Strickland, “partly in thanks to the beautiful weather.”

The festivities kicked off Thursday evening with the Downtown Rodeo Parade, led by Miss San Benito Rodeo Caili Beebe. Events over the weekend ranged from the more traditional tests of equestrian skill – including a junior division – to art shows and a family barbecue.

“People have told me that this is the one place where the tradition is really kept alive,” said Strickland. “This is family entertainment at it’s best. You don’t see this sort of thing at the other horse shows. Here, we usually see several generations of family coming together to enjoy the show, people who have moved away come back to spend time with their families here.”

If you enjoyed the rodeo and would like to take a more active part in the future, the San Benito County Saddle Horse Association is accepting applications for membership. Call the office at 628-3545 for more information.
