For more than seven years, the Hollister Rotary has visited people’s homes to make sure their smoke detectors are up to snuff.

This year, Rotarians will roam Hollister streets Saturday, March 20 from 9 a.m. to noon and service as many as 35 homes. People can call ahead and request the volunteers stop by their house. The free event targets senior citizens and disadvantages families.

“When you see the faces on these people, it’s worth it. They don’t necessarily have the money to hire people – this is a low-cost solution,” said Mike Thompson, Rotary member and event organizer.

About 10 to 15 volunteers will break up into groups of two and canvass city streets, but they don’t target certain areas. They make sure the smoke detectors are installed right and the batteries are working.

If someone wants a newer smoke detector or an additional one for their house, the volunteers give them the detectors for free.

The volunteers don’t go through any type of training. Thompson said most have participated in the annual event for a while.

“Smoke detectors are the cheapest safety insurance you can offer someone. Fire is the biggest danger people have in their home,” Thompson said.

The detectors are purchased by the Rotary and cost around $12 each.
