After finishing the Monterey Bay League season with a perfect 12-0 record, the San Benito softball team was rewarded for its success on the diamond with a Monterey Bay League-high seven all-league selections.

Megan Sabbatini, Taylor Fabing Brittany Sparrer and Adrianna Ibarra all earned first-team nominations. Brittani Newman, Ellie Burley and Calee Heen were named to the second team.

Sabbatini was also named the pitcher of the year for the MBL, after going 18-0 with a .90 ERA. She finished with 167 strikeouts and only 15 earned runs in 117 innings. She also earned one save in her only other appearance.

Fabing in her senior year led the Balers in batting average, hitting .420. She added six home runs. She also knocked in 20 runs for the Balers. Senior Sparrer also finished strong, hitting .308 with 12 RBIs and one home run. She also played strong defense in left field.

In her sophomore year, Ibarra hit .326 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. She also spelled Sabbatini in the circle, going 7-2 with a 1.90 ERA in 48 innings.

Second teamers Newman, Burley and Heen also had strong years for the Balers. Newman finished her senior year with a .360 batting average. She led the team with Burley in home runs, finishing with seven. Burley led the Balers in RBIs, knocking in 28 runs, and home runs. She finished the year with a .389 batting average.

As a freshman, Heen made a strong impact on the Balers. Heen finished the year hitting. 238 with 13 RBIs and one home run.

Senior Kim Sparrer was named an honorable mention.

SBHS Baseball

Two streaks, breaking a seven-consecutive league title run, ended for the Balers in 2013, but the San Benito baseball team was well represented in all-league awards. San Benito was rewarded with seven all-league selections.

Starting pitcher Conner Menez led the way for San Benito, earning the league’s most valuable pitcher award. Menez finished his senior year with a 1.53 ERA in 59.1 innings. He ended his season 6-2 with 61 strikeouts.

Jacob Tonascia, Josh George and Jacob Trujillo earned first team nominations. Tonascia, who was last year’s league MVP, finished the season hitting .402 with one home run and 17 RBIs. He hit a team-leading 12 doubles during the season.

George hit .402 as well, finishing with 24 RBIs and two home runs. He also played strong defense in centerfield for the Balers. George also added 10 stolen bases.

Trujillo was the Balers best pitcher out of the bullpen. Despite starting only one game, Trujillo finished the season with a 2.00 ERA in 35 innings.

The second team was highlighted by Cody Freitas, Rob Soto and Hunter Haworth. Second baseman Cody Freitas finished his junior year with a .318 batting average and 14 RBIs. Soto was a duel threat for the Balers. At the plate, Soto hit .293 with a team-high three home runs. On the mound, Soto finished 2-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 17.2 innings.

Haworth was also a key pitcher of the Balers. The junior threw 38 innings and finished with a 2.21 ERA. He struck out 29 batters and finished the season 4-3.

Garrett Kelly and Jr. Rodriguez earned honorable mention nominations.

SBHS volleyball

After a 15-1 league record and a CCS win, the San Benito volleyball team earned a league-high four all-league selections.

Robert Henderson, who earned a first-team selection, was named the league’s MVP. He was joined by seniors Dylan Lomanto and Carlos Gutierrez on the first team.

Charles Adams earned a second team selection to round out the Baler awards.
