Behind 20 points from Hyram Miskin and a strong defense, the San Benito boys basketball team improved to 2-0 inside the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division on Wednesday with a 42-26 win over Salinas.
The Balers controlled the game from the get go, grabbing a 27-14 halftime lead before cruising to the easy win. The Balers defense was strong, limiting the Cowboys to seven points or fewer in each quarter. Josef Delk led Salinas in scoring with eight points.
On offense, San Benito was led by a strong game from Miskin, who hit two 3-pointers, and Jacob Tonascia, who finished with 15 points. Miskin carried the Balers offensively in the second half, scoring 12 of his 20 points in the final 16 minutes. San Benito scored only 16 second-half points.
Tonascia, once again, was dominant up front for San Benito, leading all scorers with 12 first-half points. He was sent to the free throw line nine times during the game, making six shots.
Robert Henderson and Robbie Skinner each added three points for the Balers in the win.
With the victory, San Benito is now 12-2 overall. The Balers season continues at 7 p.m. Friday at Christopher High.
SBHS wrestling
The Balers dominated North Salinas on Wednesday, beating the Vikings 63-15 to move to 2-1 inside the MBL’s Gabilan Division.
Eric Loredo (106), Juan Gutierrez (113), Elijah Riddle (120), Patrick Ippolito (126), Simon Coelho (160), Jose Andrade (170), Tim Castillo (182) and J.J. Melo (220) all won by pin during the dual meet.
Alejandro Banuelos (195) and Alex Gonzales (285) also earned victories by forfeit.
The win comes two weeks after the Balers earned a 62-6 win over Salinas.
The Balers return to the mat Saturday during a tournament at Christopher High.
SBHS girls soccer
After falling behind 1-0, the San Benito girls soccer team scored four unanswered goals to beat Christopher 4-1 on Wednesday.
Stats were not available.
The victory gives the Balers a 5-2 overall record and two wins in the MBL’s Gabilan Division. The Balers travel to Gilroy High at 5:45 p.m. Friday.
AHS boys basketball
The Anzar boys basketball team is no longer winless. After starting the season with nine consecutive losses, the Hawks have won two straight league games to move to 2-9 overall.
The Hawks earned their first win Monday, defeating Georgiana Bruce Kirby Preparatory 65-28. They followed that win with a 36-24 win Tuesday.

AHS soccer
Two second half goals doomed the Hawks on Wednesday, as the Anzar boys soccer team fell to Gonzales 3-1 in San Juan Bautista.
The Hawks scored a first half goal but Gonzales scored two unanswered goals in the final 40 minutes to earn the victory.
Anzar is now 1-1 inside league play. The team holds a 4-2-1 overall record.
The Hawks season continues Friday on the road at Carmel. The game starts at 3:30 p.m.
