Despite a 2-1 match lead, the Hawks were not able to hold off King City in the team’s fifth Mission Trail Athletic League match of the year. King City rallied to win the match’s final two sets to pull away with a 3-2 victory.

Two days later the Hawks dropped another league match to Carmel by a 3-1 score.

The losses move Anzar’s overall record to 8-3 and 3-3 in the MTAL.

Anzar dropped the first set 25-19 on the road, but quickly took the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-15.

The Hawks couldn’t keep the moment though, dropping the next two sets 25-16 and 15-12.

On Thursday, the Hawks dropped the first two games by scores of 25-10 and 25-18. Anzar was able to squeeze out a victory in the third set by a score of 25-23, but the momentum was short-lived as the Hawks dropped a tight fourth set 26-24.

Anzar will travel to Gonzales High on Tuesday to continue league play.

SBHS tennis

The San Benito girls tennis squad returned to its winning ways to take its first league game of the year Tuesday over Watsonville – evening its overall record at 5-5 and 1-2 in league.

The Balers dominated, winning five of the seven matches over Watsonville – including the top two single player and double pair matches.

Audrey Marshall won in straight sets with identical 6-4 scores. And No. 2 singles player Ally Triolo won in two sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

No. 4 singles player Amanda Alvarez also took her match is straight sets winning with scores of 6-1 and 6-3.

Double partners Annie Tobias and Gianna Brigantino won their first match together in a tight three-set match. After winning the first set 6-3, the Baler pair dropped the second set 4-6 before running away with the tie-breaking third.

Makenzie Miguel and Berenice Bribiesca also took their first match together winning in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1.

For the first time Katarina Ortiz and Jessica White participated in a doubles match Tuesday, but the pair dropped the match in three sets. After losing the first set 6-0, the pair dominated the second set with a 6-0 score. However, the momentum wouldn’t carry over to the third and deciding set.

The tennis team hosted Monterey on Wednesday because of a scheduling conflict later in the season. The Balers also hosted Gilroy on Thursday. Look online at freelancenews.com for an update.

SBHS volleyball

The girls volleyball team knocked off its second and third league wins of the season this week, beating Notre Dame and Alisal on the road. The wins push the Balers to a 3-2 record in the Tri-County Athletic League and 10-13 overall.

Tuesday’s win was a dominant effort for the Balers, who won the first two sets of the match.

In the first set, the Balers squeaked by with a 25-22 win. In the second set, the Balers ran away with a 25-14 win.

After dropping the third set by a score of 25-18, the Balers pulled off a tough fourth set by winning 29-27.

At Alisal, the Balers got off to a fast start and never relented. San Benito won the match in straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-10 and 25-13.

San Benito host Everett Alvarez on Tuesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

SBHS girls water polo

The Balers ended a tremendously successful week – where they beat both Salinas and Live Oak but lost to Soquel 13-9 – with a win over Stevenson.

After the week, the Balers move to 4-5 in the newly-reformed Tri-County Athletic League, and 8-6 overall.

In the loss, San Benito was once again lead by Caitlin Schaffer who scored five goals. Schaffer also stole the ball nine times from the Soquel offensive push. In her first game back from a concussion, Rachel Estep contributed three goals and another nine steals. Hannah Blake also added two goals in the loss.

In the loss, the Balers missed one of their starters, Hanna Smith, because of an illness.

On Wednesday, the Balers continued league play by beating Stevenson 12-10. Schaffer had nine steals and five goals in the win. Blake, Estep and Victoria Bustamante all contributed a goal for the Balers.

The Balers travel to Gilroy on Tuesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30.

SBHS boys water polo

The Balers snuck by Palma 4-3 in a defensive battle Tuesday in Santa Catalina. The win acted as a revenge game for the Balers after dropping a tournament game to the Chieftains at St. Francis earlier this year. The win also makes up for a forfeited game from Sept. 6 – a game that the Balers won 13-8.

In the victory, San Benito scored two goals in both halves, including the only goal in the fourth quarter. Goal keeper Dalton Pence had nine saves in the Balers’ win.

Jacob Garcia scored twice for San Benito, and Tyler Reuther and Jordan Dain each added a goal.
