Boys track edges Monterey by half-point at Quicksilver
Classic
Santa Clara
San Benito manager Scott Smith said he was a little worried Saturday as his team entered the final day of the Wilcox Mission City Invitational in Santa Clara.
The Lady ‘Balers hadn’t had a weekend off since their season started, and Smith was apprehensive that his team was burned out.
But with the guarantee of supplying his squad some well-earned time off this weekend, San Benito “turned it up a notch,” Smith said.
Having already outscored their opponents by a 37-1 margin during pool play, the Lady ‘Balers marched through the Gold Division with a 7-0 against Milpitas, a 7-0 win over Mountain View, and a 5-0 victory against Homestead in the championship final.
With a perfect 6-0 record and a 56-1 scoring margin at the Mission City invite, San Benito certainly earned their vacation time.
“Over the last five games, we’re winning games the way I think we should win them,” Smith said. “Great defense. Good pitching. Good speed and aggressive on the bases. And we’re not getting into trouble.”
Marisa Ibarra pitched complete-game shutouts in all three contests in the Gold Division, and allowed just two hits against each opponent.
Against Milpitas on Friday, the San Benito ace struck out 13, while Elena Fata was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Rachel Maheu was 2-for-4 in the contest, which pushed San Benito to Saturday’s semifinal round.
Ibarra hit double-digit K’s against Mountain View in the following game, striking out 11 en route to another two-hit shutout. JC Clayton and Fata were both 2-for-2, while Maheu was 2-for-3 in the 7-0 win.
In what was supposed to be San Benito’s toughest competition of the tournament, the Lady ‘Balers once again kept their opponents off the scoreboard.
Playing Homestead in the final, a team ranked No. 10 in the latest rankings from the San Jose Mercury News, Clayton (2-for-4) connected for an RBI triple to plate the first run of the game.
With Ibarra striking out nine, it’d be the only run San Benito would need, as the Lady ‘Balers were crowned champions with a 5-0 win over Homestead.
Haley McFarlane was 2-for-3 and Fata went 2-for-4 for San Benito, which improves to 18-4 overall.
The Lady ‘Balers will return to league play Tuesday when they host North Salinas. This weekend, however, San Benito will have some much-needed time off.
“They need a break,” Smith said. “That’s a lot of softball in the last two months.”

SAN BENITO TRACK
Leland
San Benito boys coach Iran White knows how many points it takes to win a 20-team invitational, but even this came as a bit of a surprise.
The ‘Balers compiled 73.5 points at the Don Bell Quicksilver Classic last weekend at Leland, and managed to squeak past Monterey, whose 73 points was just a half-point short of San Benito.
“I knew we were up there and I knew they were up there, but I didn’t know until they announced the score,” White said. “We were doing really well all day. I kind of expected to be up there, but we did better than I expected.”
With just two first-place finishes for San Benito – Ryan Shorey in the 400 (50.31) and Austin Schmidt in the long jump (21-06) – the ‘Balers crowded into the second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-place spots to edge the Toreadors.
Behind the throws of Sarah and Lila Yoldi, the Lady ‘Balers managed to grab a fourth-place finish after compiling 48 points in Leland.
Mount Pleasant (76 points), Leland (65) and Aptos (49.5) finished ahead of San Benito.
Lila Yoldi took first in the shot put with a throw of 36-11, while Sarah took fourth in 32-01.
In the discus, Sarah took second in 97-07, and Lila grabbed sixth with a throw of 91-09.
San Benito will compete at Gilroy Thursday.

GAVILAN BASEBALL
Since a sensational 10-9, extra-inning victory over San Jose City on April 3, Gavilan baseball has lost four-straight games.
The Rams have been outscored 55-15 over the course of the losing streak, which included a 20-2 loss at Hartnell and a 19-3 defeat at Canada College in Redwood City. Gavilan put out a stronger effort on defense upon returning home last week, but still lost games to West Valley and Chabot by scores of 8-7 and 8-3, respectively.
The Rams are 8-21 overall, 2-14 Coast Conference – South. Gavilan will host Cabrillo Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Monterey Peninsula College Thursday at 2 p.m.
