The San Benito baseball team held onto its one game lead in the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division on Friday with a 4-0 win over Monterey.
The Balers, led by a 2-for-2 game from Michael Breen, finished with six hits in the victory. On the mound, Rob Soto and Conner Menez combined for seven shutout innings, allowing only six base runners.
Menez started and threw five innings, while striking out seven batters. Soto struck out three batters in two innings.
San Benito took advantage of two Monterey errors, scoring one run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning. The Balers capped the scoring with one run in the sixth inning.
The Balers (13-2, 20-4) will attempt to clinch their eighth league title in the final three games of the year. San Benito host Salinas at 4 p.m. Tuesday. They will travel to Palma on Friday. Palma trails the Balers by one game in the standings.
SBHS volleyball
The Balers’ volleyball team improved to 24-7 Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of Christopher.
San Benito dominated from the beginning, blowing past the Cougars in the opening game by winning 25-17. After a close second game (25-23), San Benito pulled away from Christopher with a 25-17 victory.
The Balers will play in the MBL championship tournament on Wednesday. Look back for opponent and time.
