Coming off a second-place finish in the final season inside the Tri-County Athletic League last year, the San Benito girls tennis squad returned to the court Tuesday, losing to Carmel 6-1.
The San Benito singles team – which is filled by four senior returnees – struggled to keep pace with Central Coast school.
“Carmel is probably the toughest team we will face all year long,” head coach Ed Cecena said.
No. 1 singles player Audrey Marshall fell in straight sets losing 6-0, 6-1. No. 2 singles player Alex Triolo also couldn’t win a set, falling 6-4, 6-1.
The Balers only victory came from No. 4 singles player Amanda Alvarez, who came from behind to win 6-7, 7-5, 10-7.
San Benito was swept in the double matches to finish the contest. Annie Tobias and Gianna Brigantino fell 6-4, 6-1. Berenice Bribiesca and Kiley Fontaine lost 6-0, 6-1. And Rachel Logue and Gwen Fernstrom lost 6-0, 6-0.
San Benito travels to Aptos on Thursday and hosts Presentation High School at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Ridgemark.
SBHS Boys Water Polo
San Benito fell to 0-2 in the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division on Tuesday, falling to Santa Cruz High 11-10.
The two team entered the final quarter tied at 8-8, but Santa Cruz pulled away with three goals. San Benito could only muster two.
Santa Cruz took an early 3-2 lead after the first quarter, holding onto the slim advantage until the third quarter. San Benito evened the score, but could never take the lead for good.
The Balers return to the pool at 5 p.m. Monday when they host Monterey.
SBHS Girls Water Polo
The Balers lost to San Lorenzo Valley 21-12 to fall to 0-2 inside the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division.
San Benito’s Caitlin Schafer contributed six goals in the loss.
The Balers travel to Stevenson High at 5 p.m. Monday.
AHS volleyball
Through two matches, the Anzar girls volleyball team has yet to loss a set. The Hawks extended their quick start Tuesday against Scots Valley. The Hawks controlled the game’s tempo, winning 25-12, 25-18 and 25-18.
It improves Anzar’s overall record to 2-0. The Hawks have not played a league game.
On Tuesday, Anzar was led by a team-high 22 digs from Mali Gonzalez. Raleigh McKinney contributed a team-high 14 kills and finished with 18 digs. Monica Medina led the game with 26 assists from the floor.
Anzar’s season continues Wednesday when they host Christopher at 6:30 p.m.
