In its final tune-up meet prior to the Mission Trail Athletic League Championships, the Anzar High boys and girls cross country teams battled rival York in a league dual meet at Gavilan College last Thursday and narrowly split both races.

The Anzar boys lost to York 25-32, while the Hawk girls emerged with a 27-30 victory over the Falcons.

Oakwood and Monterey Bay Academy also competed in Gilroy, but neither school fielded enough runners to compile a full team.

In the boys race, York’s James Palaniuk took the top spot with a 15:27. Anzar’s Aaron Hsia-Coron clocked a 16:06 to take second and Jacob Wilkinson followed with a 16:19 to grab third, but York trailed with runners in fourth, fifth and seventh place.

Anzar’s Izzy Parra was sixth in 17:11, while Miguel Vega (17:35), Armando Zepeda (17:56), Diego Leon (18:08) and Josiah Garza (18:08) finished in spots 10th through 13th place, respectively.

On the girls side, Hawk Valerie Quezada earned first place after she ran the Gavilan College course in 21:28, a full minute ahead of York’s first runner.

Meanwhile, Sabrina Gonzalez was fifth overall in 24:36, while Crystal Prado (25:17), Brittany Romero (25:19), Kelly Gomez (26:05) and Courtney Delgado (27:04) garnered places sixth through ninth, respectively.

Anzar will now compete in Thursday’s MTAL Championships, which are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., in Salinas’ Toro Park.
