Hollister – San Benito gave up a 28-7 lead over Wilcox, who came back and tied the game Friday night at San Benito.
It came down to one field goal from 44 yards out with 15 seconds left on the clock in the 28-28 game.
The kick from sophomore Drew Blake was on line and looked to be going over the uprights when it fell just a few feet short, forcing both teams to settle for the tie.
“We both felt we should have won this game,” said Baler head coach Chris Cameron. “They had their opportunities and we had ours.”
The score was tied 7-7 when the Haybalers scored three quick touchdowns, including one that came one minute into the third quarter.
The Charges fought their way back and answered all three touchdowns late in the third quarter and into the fourth.
Both teams had opportunities score the winning touchdown, but Hollister had the final chance to go ahead but was unable to finish the job.
The offense for the Haybalers was lacking in the first half with only three first downs. Hollister put together a few good plays, but couldn’t move the ball.
But coming through for Hollister was its defense, which provided the only score in the first half on a fumble recovery.
After the ball was knocked loose, it was kicked around until it was finally recovered by Blake on the 30-yard line.
He then ran it back for the touchdown.
The Hollister defense kept Wilcox off the board until late in the second quarter.
Twice, Hollister kept Wilcox out of the end zone – once they inside the 20. Both times, the Chargers failed to kick a field goal.
The defense cracked late in the second quarter.
Charger running back, Derome Fowler capped of a 35-yard drive with a 13-yard run through a gap for the touchdown.
Fowler was the most potent weapon for the Chargers, who Hollister didn’t have an answer for until the second half.
