Happy 2012 everyone. I hope you all had a safe and happy new year celebration. The only thing that could have made our new year better was if it were pouring down rain.

It’s getting pretty dry down here in South County, and after a trip to Hollister the other day, it looks about the same up that way as well. Maybe if everyone starts doing a little rain dance, we might be able to get some rain before the end of January!

Many people are taking advantage of this long, drawn-out dry spell to get their calves branded. John and Tina Bourdet branded some calves last Friday. Some of those helping out included Kent and Haley Hirdes, Brooke Fry, Chance Jackson, John and Kyla Rianda, Cash Robinson, Buster and Danielle Segura and Todd and Brody Sans.

Nessen Schmidt and the Topo Ranch branded some calves on Saturday, followed by the annual big gathering at Nessen’s home afterwards. Nessen had crews in several locations while the Topo branded a set of calves at the Little Peach Tree.

Some of those I got to visit with at the barbecue included June Rianda, Tim and Kate Hearne, Patty and Micky Hearne, Jamii Jo and Bob Brown, Jim and Edie Caps, Kuulei Flores, Cynnie O’Connor, John Brewen and Lou Harbin, Skip Utterback and Lori Tokubo and many, many others. Big-hearted Nessen even provided a Spongebob Squarepants bounce house for all the little ones running around, and believe me, there were plenty of little ones! As usual, it was another fun day.

Jo Ann Falsey took advantage of another dry day as she too branded on Saturday. Nate Holiday and Jeremy James branded some of their calves on Sunday in Reliz Canyon. Helping them out were Lee and Billy Whitney, Cody Bassetti, Rich Casey, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini and me, Todd, Brody and Sierra.

Thankfully we finished up in time to make it home to watch the entire Denver Broncos game on Sunday afternoon. How about that Tebow Time Magic? He’s darn sure putting an end to all those critics who say he can’t pass. Now, it’s on to New England. Go Broncos!

Congratulations to Kory Hitchcock for winning the season for the Naughty Football Ladies Fantasy Football League. Kory outmatched 11 other ladies to win the season. League commissioner Kristy Bourdet ended up in third place for the season while I ended up seventh. I’m already looking forward to a better season next year!

Many South County kids will be heading to the Posse Grounds this Sunday for their first high school rodeo for 2012.

The event begins with cutting at 8 a.m., followed with the other events starting at approximately 10 a.m. The kids are selling raffle tickets to win either a Yamaha Side by Side or $5,000 cash for a statewide fundraiser.

This is the final week to purchase your tickets, at only $10 each. Be sure to get in touch with any high school rodeo contestant before Sunday if you’d like a chance to win.

Have a great week and enjoy the last week of warm weather as I’m thinking positively that we’re going to start getting rain next week! And, if you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].
