When San Benito County District Attorney John Sarsfield
announced he would likely investigate and reopen past county
criminal cases citing the Brady Standard, we were pretty much like
everyone else who read about it in the Free Lance.
Huh?
Well, the mouths that initially dropped open have been anything
but silent in ripping this odd and ill-timed decision.
When San Benito County District Attorney John Sarsfield announced he would likely investigate and reopen past county criminal cases citing the Brady Standard, we were pretty much like everyone else who read about it in the Free Lance.

Huh?

Well, the mouths that initially dropped open have been anything but silent in ripping this odd and ill-timed decision.

What about the victims of those crimes?

What about the cost when the county is already struggling financially?

What about the necessary staff resources to unearth these cases that have grown a beard?

What about past cases involving San Benito County Sheriff Curtis Hill? Hill stood by Sarsfield’s side when this ridiculous witch hunt began and must wish now he was called out of town that day.

This has been a blatant attempt by Sarsfield to try to discredit the previous county district attorney’s office, particularly Harry Damkar and Dennis Stafford.

Were those guys perfect in every case they investigated and prosecuted? Of course not. But talk about throwing stones in a glass DA’s office.

Then to make a big deal out of a smattering of missing office furniture? Thus the term being off your rocker?

This Sarsfield charade is coming at a time when cases such as the totally botched and terribly unfair Robert Orabuena fiasco are already stinking up his office.

Now Sarsfield is doing a song and dance about how the “Brady” investigation started. Trying to blame the Attorney General’s office for instigating it is an insult to our intelligence.

This politically driven “Brady” absurdity should be ended today before even more wasted county tax dollars come floating out of the DA’s office.

John Sarsfield should get back to the task of properly and efficiently prosecuting the stack of current criminal cases in his office so the citizens of San Benito County will be safer.
