Playing in their final Tri-County Athletic League Tournament of the season, the San Benito High boys golf team finished runner-up to rival Palma at the Salinas Fairways Golf Course on Thursday.

Despite shooting a team score of 191, the ‘Balers couldn’t keep pace with Palma, which finished fourth in the state last year. The Chieftains recorded a 174 on Thursday.

Derell Aton led San Benito with a par 36, which was compiled on the front nine of the Salinas golf course.

“That was a really good round and he played pretty consistent,” San Benito head coach Reggie Synegal said. “He was 1-under at one point. He might have thought about that instead of playing his game, but he played a great round.”

Nathan Winn finished one stroke behind Aton with a 1-over 37, while Will Cross and Blake Stephens each finished the front with a 39. Joey Amaral’s 40 made the cut, and teammate Marcus Synegal rounded out the team with a 42.

Palma, meanwhile, enjoyed the play from three different medalists, all of whom shot a 2-under 34. Matt Ogden, Sergio Rios and Rolen Ordona led the Chieftains, while one teammate was 1-under, another 1-over.

San Benito finished behind Palma in each of the TCAL Tournaments this season except one, when it managed to finish in a tie for first with the Chieftains at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.

With its second-place standing in the TCAL, the ‘Balers will likely need to finish in third place or better at the TCAL Finals in order to qualify to the Central Coast Section regional tournament.

The TCAL Finals will take place Monday at the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club in Carmel. Tee time is 12:30 p.m.

Rounding out the TCAL Thursday was Gilroy (206), Salinas (207), Everett Alvarez (207) and Alisal (242).
