It was a too-close-for-comfort opening round District 1 Tournament game for the San Benito County Babe Ruth League 15 year-old All-Stars Saturday. The SBC 15’s needed an RBI single by Travis Ross in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Manteca 4-3 at Vets Park.
The SBC 15’s play Modesto on Tuesday at 6 p.m. as the District 1 Tournament continues. Modesto blanked Ripon 10-0 on Sunday.
Down 3-2 in the seventh, the SBC 15’s received walks to Josh Torrise and Karson Klauer to begin the inning. Anthony Vasquez hit a ball in the infield which was thrown away to let Torrise score the tying run. Ross’ single knocked in Klauer for the game-winner.
“It was an exciting game,” said SBC 15’s manager Scott Flaherty. “The kids really came through under pressure.”
Klauer pitched the last two innings of relief to get credit for the victory. Vasquez pitched the first five innings and gave up a mammoth three-run home run to a Manteca hitter, who checked into the game in the fourth inning.
“I think that ball is still going,” said Flaherty. “Anthony left the ball over the plate and the guy hit the ball farther than any ball I have ever seen hit out of that park.”
Kyle Ferguson had a double and a single, while Ross had two hits. The SBC 15’s had seven hits as a team.
The first run was scored on a squeeze play with James Macfarlane at the plate and Ferguson on at third.
On Sunday, Manteca eliminated Tracy 14-2. Manteca and Ripon meet tonight at Vets Park in an eliminaton game at 6 p.m.
