Regular meeting on Wednesday could see reduction of $100,000
from athletic budget

The San Benito High School District could cut $100,000 from the school’s athletic fund on Wednesday night during the Board of Trustees’ regular meeting, as part of a recently announced districtwide budget cut to fill a $1.8 million deficit.

The proposed cut would come from the district contribution, which pays for coaches, officials and clerical work, among other things, according to the SBHS web site.

The $100,000 proposed cut could see coaches stipends cut in half next year, a negotiated item that could result in approximately $82,000 cut from the budget.

This is on top of a board imposed waiver of transportation fees, which is costing the athletic department anywhere between $15,000 to $20,000 this year.

According to the school’s web site, the Associated Student Body, which along with boosters also help finance the athletic fund with the district’s contribution, is currently covering 20 percent of the transportation waivers.

Superintendent Stan Rose announced the “Budget Gap Elimination Plan” earlier this month, with a list of cuts totaling $1.5 million and $300,000 pulled from reserves. The district’s goal was to have the cuts finalized by Wednesday’s meeting.

The school board’s regular meeting will be held at the SBHS cafeteria on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
