Engaged Holladay-DeGroff Ken and Jacqui Holladay of Gilroy are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Michelle Holladay, to Darrell DeGroff. Darrell is the son of Len and Dianne DeGroff of Fair Oaks, Calif. The couple plan to wed May 28.

Military

Homero Daniel Gomez

Homero Daniel Gomez arrived with his unit at Camp Pendleton on March 28.

During his deployment, he has been working as a Navy Corpsman in an emergency room setting evaluating and treating the injured.

After his deployment, Gomez will be returning to the Naval Medical Center in San Diego where he will continue his service as a Medic and/or Physical Therapist Technician.

Gomez is the son of Homero and Evelia Gomez. He was born and raised in Hollister, and graduated from San Benito High School in 1999.

He joined the Navy in August of 1999 and graduated from boot camp later that same year in November.

Cesar Zapata

Lt. Cesar Zapata is stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, and is preparing for his second tour in Iraq. Zapata graduated from Gilroy High School in 1992.

Christopher L. Mason

Amry Pvt. Christopher L. Mason has graduated rom the Signal Support Systems Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Gordon, Augusta, Ga.

The 10-week course is designed to train students in the skills, knowledge and responsibilities required to provide telecommunications, signal support systems and terminal devices and integrating signal systems and networks to combat units on the battlefield. Training includes instruction in operation, installation, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing of various field wire equipment, radio, telephone and associated communications systems, as well as operate and perform preventive maintenance checks and services on assigned vehicles and power generators.

Mason is the son of Pamela Y. Wilton of Bonnie View Drive in Hollister and Robert L. Mason of W. Melody Ave., Portage, Mich.

Corey A. Bell

Catholic Ladies Celebrate Longtime Members

The Catholic Ladies Aid Society, Branch 6, was started in Gilroy in 1888 by a relative of Frances Cullen Howson.

This month, the organization celebrated its 118th birthday with a potluck luncheon at Serra Cottage, attended by 60 members and guests, and was presided over by President Bruna Goold.

A large number of members from the society attended the Sunday, March 6, 8:15am Mass at St. Mary Parish. Following the Mass, 76 members and family attended a breakfast at Cullen Hall. At the breakfast, Goold recognized members with 50 or more years of continuous membership who received a card inscribed with their name and number of years of membership.

They are: Frances Howson with 70 years, Elizabeth Cullen with 68 years, Camilla Serafin, Edith Stimac and Evelyn Paganucci with 65 years, Jane Gonzales with 64 years, Ailene Crispino, Mary Jane Green, and Marietta Scagliotti with 63 years, Irene Vosti and Jennie Filice with 62 years, Eva Holback with 61 years, Ida Link with 60 years, Annabel Santos and Evelyn Codiga with 59 years, Clara Perino, Emma Frassetti and Katherine Codiga with 58 years, Lupe Sanchez, Mary Pirozzoli, Carmen Sanchez, Linda Giretti and Bette Scarper with 57 years, Ruth Habing with 55 years, Mary Santana with 56 years, Dorothy Coffman with 51 years and Jane Sanchez with 50 years.

The oldest living member is Jane Dedini Gonzales.

The society operates a religious store at St. Mary Parish, gives scholarships to St. Mary School, subsidizes St. Joseph’s Family Center and contributes to other parish and community causes.
