Editor,

Wednesday was the sentencing of a woman who killed my brother Richard Flores last year while driving drunk. This woman, Dolores Garcia, had an alcohol level of .178, which is over the legal limit. Judge Sanders gave her eight months.

It is no wonder that drunk driving is rampant is California. Judges like this who care nothing about human life or the taking of a human life are now sending a message to San Benito County residents and California that drunk driving is OK even if you kill someone.

This judge has diminished my brother’s life and has basically allowed Ms. Garcia to get away with vehicular manslaughter. Politicians speak of the problems of drunk driving but enact laws that give criminal behavior the loopholes needed to avoid harsher sentences. Allow drunk drivers who kill a slap on the wrist and it’s the families of the one killed that have to deal with the loss.

I wrote my impact statement for this sentencing addressed to the Honorable Judge Steven Sanders. I will never consider this judge to be honorable again. His wisdom is lacking and his judgment is dishonorable. He has empowered drunk drivers in San Benito County and the surrounding counties to drive under the influence. In his court, you will get off.
