Editor,
Lisa Pampuch’s column published Wednesday is nothing more than a left-wing political attack on the present federal leadership (President George Bush). And, what’s so pathetic about it is she uses the Katrina hurricane disaster as a prop to advance her personal politics.
Here are some facts, Lisa …
The City of New Orleans has a hurricane evacuation plan for their city! It calls for its citizens to use their own transportation to get out if warned to do so. If they don’t have transportation, then the city is to provide buses for transport. That plan was never implemented. No buses were ever provided, even with three days warning.
This is what the mayor of the “Big Easy” said to his constituents, “Walk to the Superdome and bring your own food and water.”
The governor of Louisiana took an extra 24 hours to declare a state of emergency which delayed national guard deployment. Talk about insensitivity! And, Lisa, the leaders of that state are of your political stripe!
FEMA does need to account for its failures. But as a former emergency worker, I can tell you that FEMA is not a first-response provider.
FEMA’s job is to augment and provide long-term help in reconstruction. In this scenario, evacuation and rescue is the responsibility of local government (and it’s their responsibility to ask for help as soon as they realize they’re going to need it.)
The socialist state of Louisiana failed!
Lisa, you urged Free Lance readers to write a big check to help. I have written my “big check” for Katrina’s victims and mailed it to the Salvation Army. I hope you’ve sent yours.
