The Hollister High boys basketball team will find out just where it stands tonight when the Balers tangle with height-enhanced Live Oak in the semifinals of the Bob Hagen Classic at Gilroy High. The Balers (8-1) face the Acorns (8-1) at 6:30 p.m. Live Oak, which features a huge front line, is ranked 11th in the Central Coast Section.
Hollister earned the right with a first-round 61-45 win over Aptos on Thursday. Kyle Sharp continued his fine preseason with a career-high 30 points on 11 field goals and eight free throws.
“It was a great win,” said Baler head coach David Kaplansky, who has the Balers off to their best start in years. “We held them to 14 points in the first half with some great defense.”
Broc Sondgroth went 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch and had eight points, while Anthony Butler had 12 points for the Balers. Danny Brooks had eight for Hollister.
“I scored mostly on putbacks,” said Sharp. “The whole team played well. We can win tonight if we can get inside and get them in foul trouble. We also have to be hot from outside.”
If the Balers win tonight, they’ll be in the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. The third-place game is at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
In girls hoop action, the Balers take on El Camino (Sacramento) tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the Oak Grove Tournament. Oak Grove faces Castilleja in the other semifinal at 8 p.m.
The championship game is Saturday at 4 p.m.
