San Juan Bautista – Longtime Mission City resident Shawna Serna will be officially resigning as city clerk at the beginning of July.
But Serna, 41, won’t be leaving government work. She’s just moving over to be city clerk in Gilroy.
Serna ran unopposed for the city clerk’s position in November 2000 and again in 2004. But Serna said her role has been largely ceremonial since she went back to school in January 2005.
“Unfortunately, because of the size of the city, it can only offer so much growth for me professionally,” she said.
Serna has been working as an administrative assistant in Gilroy since September, and she said taking over as city clerk there is “a dream come true.”
San Juan Bautista City Councilman Ed Laverone said he’s happy for Serna, whom he’s known since they were in elementary school together.
“I think it’s an excellent career opportunity for her. But it’s a hard thing for us because we haven’t had huge interest in (that position),” he said. “It’d be nice to see someone step up.”
City Manager Jan McClintock said the council has yet to decide how to fill Serna’s position. The city could appoint a city clerk to take the spot until Serna’s term ends in November 2008, McClintock said.
