A three-car collision on Shore Road left two people dead last Saturday.
Yolanda Louise Hernandez, 56, of Los Banos, and her passenger Arnulfo T. Garcia, 65, of Hayward, sustained fatal injuries after her 2014 Kia Forte was struck by a 2017 GMC Yukon and a 2013 Kensworth on Saturday, September 23 at 7:39 a.m.
Garcia was the former editor-in-chief of the inmate-run paper San Quentin News.
At the time of the collision, Richard Mendes, 48, of Hollister, with passengers Diane Mendes, 41, and N. Mendes, 12, were travelling westbound on Shore Road approaching Frazier Lake Road in the Yukon sport utility vehicle.
Hernandez’s Kia compact car was travelling southbound on Frazier lake Road approaching Shore Road.
According to a California Highway Patrol press release, Hernandez didn’t yield at the stop sign at the intersection of Shore and Frazier Lake Roads and struck the front-passenger side of Mendes’ Yukon. Hernandez was then struck by the Kenworth heavy-duty truck driven by Ulises Cuevas, 27, of Atwater.
Hernandez and Garcia sustained fatal injuries from the collisions.
It’s unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol played a factor.
The collision is still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the collision is encouraged to call CHP Officer Tiffany Quintana at 408-848-2324.
