Hollister – The San Benito High girls’ tennis team suffered a 7- defeat to visiting Aptos on Wednesday at Ridgemark. But in the loss, the Haybalers have discovered a strength.

Freshman Amanda Marshall moved up to the number-one singles spot for Wednesday’s match against the Mariners due to the fact that Danielle Burke, Hollister’s regular number one, had to sit out because of an illness for a second-straight day.

On Tuesday, Marshall put together a strong match against Kelsey Nicks of Salinas, one of the Tri-County Athletic League’s top players. Marshall dropped the first set to Nicks 6-2 but won the second 6-4. Marshall fell 10-5 in the deciding third-set tiebreaker but head coach Ed Cecena was happy with what he saw.

“It was an excellent effort (on Tuesday),” Cecena said. “And then today, she was feeling the effects of that match and she wasn’t at full strength. But I’m very pleased with the way she’s playing.”

On Wednesday, Marshall dropped her match to Brittany Varva 6-3, 7-5. Marshall returns to the number-two spot for today’s match against Notre Dame as Burke plans to play.

The Haybalers, who were also without the services of Jamie Houston and Kaitlyn O’Keefe on Wednesday also got a good match out of their number-two doubles team as Michelle Rovella and Rebecca Williams lost a competitive 6-3, 6-3 match.

The team is back at Ridgemark today for a 3:30pm match against Notre Dame.

Note: The SBHS girls’ tennis team will be holding a car wash fundraiser on Saturday at Gold’s Gym from 8am to 1pm to help raise money for uniforms.
