In the 28th Assembly District, which is being vacated by the State Senate run of incumbent Assemblywoman Anna Caballero, there are quite a few candidates, according to records from area elections offices.

In the Democratic primary for the Assembly seat, Salinas City Councilwoman Janet Barnes, Watsonville Mayor Luis Alejo and Gilroy school board member Francisco Dominguez appear to be in the race, though the secretary of state won’t certify legislative candidates until April 1.

The GOP primary field in the 28th appeared to draw three candidates: Rick Shephard of Salinas, Allen Barker of Hollister and Robert Bernosky of San Benito County.

In the 12th State Senate District, Caballero, a former Salinas mayor, looked like she would be unchallenged in the Democratic primary and face Republican Anthony Cannella, mayor of Ceres, in November.

In the 17th U.S. Congressional District, longtime Democratic incumbent Rep. Sam Farr of Carmel drew a primary challenge from retired Monterey businessman and perennial candidate Art Dunn.

The Republican primary field in the 17th shaped up to be a three-way contest with Gary Arnold of Santa Cruz, Pete Andresen of Salinas and Jeff Taylor of Salinas.

Eric Petersen of Salinas is running in the Green Party congressional primary.
