The county seat will take a back seat to San Juan Bautista for at least one night.

That’s because the “Mission City” will hold the only event for National Night Out in San Benito County this year, which takes place Tuesday from 5 p.m. until dusk at the State Historic Park Plaza.

It’s geared toward kids, sending an anti-crime message with a purpose for local law enforcement and other public safety agencies to create a bond with the community. There will be many activities for kids, including jump houses and a dunk tank.

This will be the third consecutive year for a National Night Out in San Juan. The San Benito County Sheriff’s Department is organizing the gathering, along with help from California State Parks and other public safety agencies. Hollister won’t celebrate this year because of budget constraints.

Each year, law enforcement agencies throughout the country hold similar National Night Out events at this time of year to promote prevention of criminal activities. The Hollister Police Department had held one for seven consecutive years before canceling the 2004 event.

Hollister residents, though, are welcome to attend in San Juan, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

There will be an array of activities for adults and kids, along with food and beverages. Organizers also will hold demonstrations involving a sheriff’s K-9 dog and a CALSTAR helicopter.

For more information, call the Sheriff’s Department at 636-4080.
