Hollister High exploded for five goals to none for Salinas as the Balers won their second straight Tri-County Athletic League boys soccer match 5-0 Monday.

The Balers have climbed to 5-2-1 overall and 2-2 in the T-CAL.

The match was played at Andy Hardin Field thanks to some decent willpower by coach Michael Warner, who had to emergency-wire maintenance to open the gate. As for the gate, it was a $2 admission charge and Warner estimated the crowd at 40.

The Balers tallied first on a Brian Vargas blast in the third minute. Vargas spun his defender around and raced to the goal where he beat the keeper to the right side.

Hollister broke open a tight match in the second half as they peppered the Cowboys (2-8-1) with shots.

Elias Barocio scored in the 48th minute, followed four minutes later by Pablo Andrade. Geraldo Lostanau missed two opportunities and Nick Vandenberg just missed on an open look or else the match would have been a real rout.

Finally, John Hansen drove a shot home from the left post and Mario Zaragoza capped off the Baler scoring in the 76th minute.

“We showed good ball movement and controlled the midfield early,” said Warner. “But the lack of finishing our scoring attempts continues to be a problem.”

Warner hinted at changes in the Baler forwards when Hollister travels to Salinas to play Palma at the Salinas Sports Complex Thursday at 4 p.m.
