You have an idea for a great small business. But how do you turn that idea into reality and how do you let the rest of the world know what a super product or service you’re offering?

Gavilan College’s Small Business Development Center has suggestions for both dilemmas. On Thursday Gavilan is offering a workshop in Hollister on “How to get your business up and running.”

The two-hour class will present an overview of marketing essentials, product selection, business goal setting, legal issues, licenses required, risk evaluation, bookkeeping, financing and management issues.

Statistics aren’t kind to the survival of new businesses, but many experts agree that the causes of the failures can be traced back not to the idea, but to the execution. Perhaps the business was undercapitalized to begin with, or a nonexistent marketing strategy kept potential customers ignorant of the businesses’ products or services.

Marketing is such a key component of successful startup businesses that Gavilan’s Small Business Development Center is offering a specialized workshop, also this Thursday, on “Small Business Marketing.”

The instructor will walk small business owners through an overview of basic marketing strategies, and discuss how to create a plan to successfully market your business products or services.

The focus will be on action-oriented marketing that will help business owners find customers, promote products and services and increase sales.

The class structure will allow an exchange of marketing strategies among other small business owners in the class.

The two classes will run concurrently, with the marketing class beginning at 10 a.m. and running until noon at the Briggs Building, 365 Fourth St. in Hollister. After a break for lunch, “Get Your Business Up and Running” is slated to begin at 1 p.m. and will run until 3 p.m. Each class can be taken by itself.

The cost of each class is $20.

Space is limited so Gavilan is requesting attendees to pre-register by calling 408-847-0373.
