SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Behind a goal and two assists from Brianna Miltimore, the Anzar girls soccer team opened Coastal Athletic League play on Friday with a convincing 4-0 win over visiting Georgiana Bruce Kirby.
Miltimore staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute of the game off an assist by Lauren Bellone, then set up Nicki Seymour for a score some 15 minutes later.
While Anzar’s Hakima Hossainzadeh made it a three-goal game in the 62nd minute, Miltimore helped pile on the insurance in the 70th minute when she assisted Sabrina Perez on a goal to push the Hawks ahead 4-0.
“We started kind of slow, but I think that was because we hadn’t had a game in a few weeks,” Anzar head coach Carlos Flores said. “It was a good win to start our season.”
It was Anzar’s first game since a Dec. 15 match against Alisal. The last two scheduled matches for the Hawks — against Pajaro Valley on Dec. 17 and against Gonzales on Jan. 5 — were both postponed.
But despite the long layoff, Anzar’s return to the pitch after 23 days finished with a four-goal result, nevertheless.
The Hawks are now 3-3-1 overall, 1-0 in the CAL.
The schedule ramps up for the Hawks this week, though. Anzar will square off against Santa Catalina on Monday at 5 p.m. in the final game of the Watsonville Tournament.
Anzar will then visit Marina on Tuesday at 4 p.m., and will host Pacific Collegiate on Thursday at 4 p.m.
“If we can come out of this week with two wins and maybe a tie, we should be set for the rest of the season,” Flores said.
