The San Benito Haybalers ran into a different Milpitas team this year.

One year removed from defeating the Trojans at home by a 3-0 margin, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie on Saturday in a non-conference matchup at Milpitas.

“It was a good game, but not the result I would like,” said San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez, whose team is now 2-0-1 on the season. “Milpitas was much stronger than last year’s team, lots of speed.”

Coming off a game against San Lorenzo Valley in which it pocketed six goals, San Benito was without a point on Saturday against Milpitas, which is now 3-2-1 on the year.

The Balers did take nine shots on net to Milpitas’ four, however, but connected with the crossbar three or four times, Alvarez said.

“It was like a magnet,” he added. “I would have liked 20 shots (on net). I felt like we were holding the ball too long. We need to take those shots as soon as we are within range. We need to take those shots, but we didn’t do that.”

On the opposite side, San Benito’s defense is playing “outstanding” right now, Alvarez said. In three games, the Balers have not allowed a goal.

San Benito will look to keep that scoreless streak alive on Tuesday when it will travel to the Morgan Hill Sports Complex to take on Sobrato. Kickoff is 4:45 p.m.
