Karly Leon had two goals, Cynthia Trujillo and Hannah Cobb each added one, and the San Benito girls’ soccer team upended host North Salinas 4-0 on Monday in the Tri-County Athletic League opener for both teams.

Although it was San Benito’s first contest since a Dec. 22 match against El Camino of South San Francisco, the Balers appeared to pick up exactly where they left off, nonetheless.

Most notably, San Benito took its usual amount of shots on net against North Salinas (6-2, 0-1 TCAL) — it had 22 chances — while also silencing the opposition with another goose egg on the scoreboard.

“We held them to two shots (on net),” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “Our defense is very solid right now.”

The Balers have allowed just two goals this season, both of which were scored in their previous match against El Camino.

It was Leon who supplied the only goal San Benito needed on Monday when she found the back of the net in the first half to stake the Balers to a slim lead at halftime. San Benito then tacked on three more insurance goals in the second half to make it a four-goal cushion.

The team is now 1-0 in the TCAL, 5-0-4 overall for the season.

The only team in the TCAL to allow fewer goals than the Balers is Salinas (8-0-1), which gave up a one goal to Pacific Grove on Dec. 10 and nothing more.

Something will have to give on Wednesday, though, when San Benito and Salinas square off in Hollister at 3:30 p.m.
