It was a dominant performance, head coach Ben Alvarez said. But the final score didn’t reflect as much.

Still, with the San Benito defense posting another shutout — its 11th this season — Sara Yamasaki’s goal in about the 30th minute was all the team would need, as the Balers edged visiting North Salinas 1-0 on Monday in Tri-County Athletic League action.

The win improves San Benito to 6-0-1 in the TCAL, 10-0-5 overall.

“The girls played very, very well. We took a lot of shots,” Alvarez said. “We just weren’t able to capitalize on that.”

Alvarez surmised the Balers had corner-kick attempts well into the double digits, with roughly 15 or 16 shots on net, while North High was limited to just two shots in the game.

“It was a constant push by the girls. We were dominant, just couldn’t find the back of the net,” Alvarez said. “But it was a good win to start the second half.”

North Salinas falls to 1-5-1 in the TCAL.

San Benito’s next challenge will come against Salinas, which currently sits in third place with a 4-2-1 record. The Cowboys still boast the most goals scored in the TCAL with 42, although they were shutout by a 4-0 margin the previous time they faced San Benito on Jan. 12.

The two teams will meet up on Wednesday in Salinas. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m.
